The annual Sea of Blue Autism Awareness Walk/ 5K/ 10K racecourse takes walkers and runners through beautiful sections of Northeast Harbor and Acadia National Park. The race is professionally timed, and the route is covered by a local amateur radio club for race progress and any emergency communication. It’s the creation of Christopher Heel, started ashis high school senior exhibition project in 2014.
The event is more than just a race; however, it’s also a community celebration. While most participants come from Hancock and Washington counties in Maine, runners have come from as far as North Caroline and Nova Scotia. You will see walkers and runners of all ages, from children to the 80+ category. The participants include people of all abilities, including some on the autism spectrum, and occasionally some in wheelchairs. You will see friends and families running or walking together, sometimes with their furry friends running alongside them.
Some community members and sponsors donate items for the silent auction while others donate snacks and treats, all housed in the warm, cozy Neighborhood House. Racers, their family and friends, and community members may participate in the auctions and prize giveaways, and enjoy the snacks, before, during and after the walk/ runs. The closing festivities awarding medals and announcing prize winners are especially fun!
The real power of the event is just getting started as the day ends because the awareness and the money raised will continue to provide a fundraiser for area schools and agencies that support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. The annual Sea of Blue Walk/ 5K/ 10K is a triple win for the participants, the local community, and the agencies that assist those on the autism spectrum to live their best lives.
